How to Create Your Perfect Space (and Mood) with Essential Oils

By Joe Jackson, Founder + Head Nutritionist At Apothecary 27

I’ll admit — as a nutritionist, essential oils aren’t exactly my area of expertise. But when it comes to creating an environment that feels calm, energised, or simply nice to be in, they’re hard to beat.

Our surroundings shape our mood more than we realise — and scent is a powerful messenger. One whiff can shift us from sluggish to focused, from stressed to serene.

My Everyday Favourites

My personal go-to blend is rosemary and peppermint — fresh, sharp, and instantly uplifting.
It’s brilliant for focus and memory, which makes it perfect for busy mornings or long days at the counter.
When I’m diffusing it in the shop, people always walk in and ask, “What’s that smell?” — and before long, they’re heading straight for the essential oil shelves.

This morning, though, I’ve got lemon, bergamot, and tea tree in the diffuser.
There’s a lot of seasonal illness going round, so tea tree adds that clean, antiseptic edge, while bergamot brings a gentle, mood-boosting brightness.
Before I leave home, I often put a couple of drops of bergamot in my hand, take a calm, deep inhale, and it’s an instant reset for the mind. A great little ritual to start the day.

Blends to Try at Home

Here are a few simple combinations you can experiment with — no complicated recipes, just easy pairings for your diffuser or oil burner:

💤 For Sleep:

  • Lavender + Chamomile + Cedarwood
    (Deeply relaxing, grounding, and restorative.)

🪷 For Calm:

  • Frankincense + Geranium + Orange
(Softly floral with a soothing citrus lift.)

🎯 For Focus:

  • Rosemary + Peppermint + Lemon
(Clean, sharp, and great for concentration.)

For Energy:

  • Grapefruit + Lime + Eucalyptus
(Bright and refreshing — a wake-up for the senses.)

A Gentle Reminder

Essential oils can’t fix every problem, but they can help us shape the spaces where we rest, work, and breathe. A few mindful drops in a diffuser can turn the ordinary into something intentional — a cue for calm, clarity, or creativity.
