NOTES FROM OUR NUTRITIONIST

Ashwagandha and lemon balm are two of the herbs I have recommended most consistently throughout my career, and the reason is straightforward: they work, they are well-tolerated, and the research supporting their use continues to strengthen.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is classified as an adaptogen — a plant that helps the body regulate its response to physical and psychological stress. Its primary mechanism involves the modulation of cortisol, the body's main stress hormone. Elevated cortisol over prolonged periods is associated with fatigue, disrupted sleep, impaired immunity, and low mood — a pattern that is, for many people, deeply familiar. Clinical studies on ashwagandha root extract have demonstrated meaningful reductions in perceived stress and cortisol levels, alongside improvements in sleep quality and physical endurance. It is not a sedative and does not blunt alertness — rather, it helps restore a more balanced physiological baseline.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) brings a complementary action. Where ashwagandha works primarily on the hormonal stress axis, lemon balm acts more directly on the nervous system — promoting a sense of calm and easing the mental restlessness that often accompanies stress and anxiety. Its traditional use as a relaxing nervine stretches back to antiquity, and modern research has validated its role in reducing anxiety, supporting mood, and improving sleep onset without the grogginess associated with stronger sedative herbs.

Together, they represent the kind of considered pairing that herbal medicine does particularly well — two plants with overlapping but distinct mechanisms, each reinforcing the other. 250mg of organic ashwagandha root and 250mg of organic lemon balm leaf per capsule, one to two capsules daily, in a clean plant-based capsule with nothing else added.
