NOTES FROM OUR NUTRITIONIST
Every year, customers ask for the same thing: one formula they can trust to support their immunity through the colder months, and reach for more intensively when they feel run down. Building Apothecary 27's Immune Complex was an exercise in restraint as much as ambition — there are dozens of immune-supportive ingredients we could have included, but the ones that made the final formula are there because each earns its place.
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra, 300mg) brings a rich concentration of anthocyanins — the pigments responsible for its deep colour and its well-documented ability to support the body's immune response, particularly during seasonal illness. It is one of the most studied botanicals in this area, and one of the most consistent in its results.
Garlic (Allium sativum, 300mg) has been valued across cultures for its antimicrobial and immune-modulating properties for thousands of years. Its active compounds, including allicin, have been shown to support both the innate and adaptive immune responses, and it remains one of the most evidence-backed botanicals in natural medicine.
Olive leaf (Olea europaea, 260mg) is rich in oleuropein, a compound with well-researched antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It is among the most effective botanical antivirals available and one I return to consistently in immune support protocols.
Quercetin (Sophora japonica, 250mg) is a plant flavonoid that does double duty here — bringing its own antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties while also acting as a natural ionophore, helping to transport zinc into cells where it can exert its immune function. It also supports the bioavailability of compounds in elderberry and olive leaf, making the whole formula work harder.
Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata, 200mg) is a herb with a long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine for acute illness. Modern research supports its role in supporting white blood cell activity and reducing the duration of upper respiratory infections.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale, 40mg) provides warming, circulatory, and anti-inflammatory support — the kind of ingredient that has earned its place in every culture's traditional medicine chest.
Manuka honey powder (40mg) contributes its unique antimicrobial properties and brings a quiet nod to the kitchen cupboard remedies that have always sat at the heart of immune support.
Zinc bisglycinate (10mg, 100% NRV) completes the formula — an essential mineral for immune cell development and function, chosen in its bisglycinate form for superior absorption.
Two capsules daily for everyday maintenance. Up to six capsules daily for intensive support when needed.
