Why We Make Our Own Supplements | The Apothecary 27 Collection

There's a question we get asked at the counter more than almost any other: why did you start making your own supplements?

The honest answer is that we wanted to know — with absolute certainty — exactly what goes into them.

At Apothecary 27, we've spent years championing the brands we stock. Every product on our shelves is chosen with care, and if something doesn't meet our standards, it simply doesn't find a home here. But over time, founder Joe Jackson found himself looking at supplements he genuinely believed in and thinking: this is great — but if I were formulating it myself, I'd do something differently.

That thought became a question. The question became a process. And the process became the Apothecary 27 Collection.

What Makes a Good Supplement? Purposeful Ingredients at Therapeutic Doses

Every product in the collection begins with one question: what is its true purpose? From there, the non-negotiable ingredients are identified — and crucially, included at doses that are genuinely therapeutic rather than tokenistic.

This matters more than most people realise. Many supplements on the market contain the right ingredients on paper, but at doses too small to deliver real benefit. A product can look impressive on the label while doing very little in the body. That's not something we're willing to put our name to.

At the same time, more isn't always better. Our Magnesium, for example, is formulated at 250mg — a dose some customers initially question. But we chose highly absorbable forms — magnesium citrate and bisglycinate — over cheaper, poorly absorbed alternatives that often appear at higher doses purely for label appeal. The results speak for themselves.

Natural Supplements Without Fillers — Our Commitment to Transparency

Transparency is built into everything we make. We're not interested in bulking out our formulas with unnecessary fillers or binders unless they serve a genuine purpose. When an ingredient is included, it's there for a reason. When it isn't, there's a reason for that too.

Take our forthcoming Health Foundation Complex — a multivitamin we've made the deliberate decision to formulate without magnesium. Not because magnesium isn't important, but because it's a bulky ingredient that works far better supplemented separately at a therapeutic dose. Removing it frees up space to include nutrients that are harder to get from food alone, at levels that actually make a difference.

Supplements Born From Real Conversations

Perhaps what makes the Apothecary 27 Collection most distinctive is where it comes from. These aren't products developed in isolation — they're the result of years of daily conversations at the counter. Customers telling us what they're struggling with. Questions we've been asked hundreds of times. Gaps we've noticed in what's available.

That connection between store and supplement is something no online retailer can replicate. And it's why every product we make feels, to us, like it was always meant to exist.
